My Jamaica Plain Reading: Word on The Street, July 5th

Since moving to Jamaica Plain, I haven't had much to do with its arts scene, given my existing commitments to Stone Soup in Cambridge. Next month, however, on July 5th, I have a feature at Word on The Street at the Sweet Finnish Bakery, just down the street from where I now live. Consider it my belated hello to the town.

I'll be reading some new work plus an excerpt or two from the Cervena Barva Press book coming out next year. I hope to see some of you there.

Word on The Street is part of the first Thursday arts events in JP. It's emceed by Sandee Storey, Editor/publisher of the JP Gazette. Recent features include Gloria Mindock and next month will be Tom Daley (August 2nd). Thanks to Carolyn Gregory for providing me the opportunity.

For those who don't want to wade through my above rambling:

WORD ON THE STREET featuring Chad Parenteau

WHEN: Thursday, June 5th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm
WHERE: Sweet Finnish Bakery, 761 Centre Street

Come enjoy a little bit of Greenwich Village in the middle of JP with terrific poetry, lots of open mic time, baked goods & coffee. . . Guaranteed: You will NOT be disappointed.

Jamaica Plain had a considerable number of alternative art spaces in the mid to late 1990s presenting musical, performance art, and spoken word events that was part of a larger circuit that extended to the South End, Chinatown and into Fort Point. Real estate factors very much destroyed that circuit in Boston, and I found most of my activities moving to Cambridge even when I was still living in J.P.

It's good, however, that there is another business willing to support poetry in the community-- and its important for artists to participate in the scene in ones own neighborhood (assuming there is one), even if one have a presence in the larger Boston Metropolitan scene.
