The award above was presented to me earlier this month from the training/research department I work for in the Boston VA. You can't imagine what this means to someone who trudged through his first year as a full-fledged government employee (Before that, I'd been working for the same department for three years prior subcontracted through the New England College of Optometry). It gave me such validation, given that it barely felt like I knew what I was doing for half the year. More importantly, it gave me a sense of job security, which means a lot more in these times.
Maybe I'm making a big deal of it, but before this, my best work achievements (as in from actual paying jobs) were from the seafood restaurant I waited tables at years ago. There, I won a one-year pin and a gift certificate for selling the most shrimp cocktails, pudding cakes and cafe internationals in a month. I spent the certificate, lost the pin and left the restaurant business six months before I earned a five-year pin.
