Though I have never been able to support myself as a writer, most people who look at my website would deem me a successful one, simply for the list of books I'm in that they don't buy and have never seen in stores.
I never became a college teacher like my father wanted me to, and yet on a job-related website, I am listed as a faculty member for the training center I work for. This isn't official, however, so I could never apply for a teaching job while listing this generously granted title.
And even though I have never made a dime off of organizing events and have two atrociously failed fundraisers under my belt, fellow writers in the scene see me as a man of influence and even power.
The moral is this: You can be anything you want to be. As long as you don't take the money.
