Last week, I had an editor work with me on a project, not related to poetry. I haven't had much luck with editors in this particular area we were focusing on, and I'm afraid that I might be the least upset in the last of these recent dealings because I had to desensitize myself a bit.
Still, I think it was a positive experience, particularly given the editor's delivery. I had to do some radical revisions, but it was out of the fact that a) said editor had years of experience over me and b) had presented point-by-point reasons as to why I needed to make the changes. Past editors also out-experienced me, but their reasons were never clearly stated, or they contradicted their reasons in the very work they later produced.
With recent "collaborations," I long came to the conclusion that certain personalities were resorting to a form of bullying to get their ever-mutating wishes across. They also relied on the fact that we had put too much time into projects long thought finished to put up much in the way of arguments.
Last week marked the first time I felt I was being edited by a person's knowledge, not their ego. I'd like to see more of this, but I doubt it will happen.
