That's a very good question.  But don't forget Joe Hickerson.  He wrote almost half the finished song!  It irks me when people don't get credit in posterity.

Oh, yes, the flowers...Well, its still winter in Boston apparently, no matter what the calendars say.  Try checking out the Back Bay neighborhood in a couple of weeks.  They seem to pop up there first.  It's like they have a street party over there.
