Welcome to the one month anniversary of Stone Soup Croutons. What follows is a poem taken from lines and words overheard during Stone Soup Poetry's open mic this past Monday.
On July 6, we had Colin Killick feature. A perfect night with a lively open mic, with a couple of people performing at Stone Soup for the first time ever. There were only two obstacles to the night. One was I ended up getting to Stone Soup late. Jason Wright assumed the hosting duties, but I had missed a couple of people who read. The other obstacle was that I had to leave a little early to help out my girlfriend before she took off for vacation (I'm joining her tomorrow). I stayed as long as I could and listened to the open mic as much as I could. Even if my actions might have disappointed, the people who read last night did not, and I think I got some good material for this week's piece, which I read before I had to go. Special nod to Colin's poem on eugenics, even if it made the poem get away from me.
As always the poets I borrow from are to be thanked for their contributions, not blamed for the final results.
Stone Soup Croutons, 7/6/15
Everywhere the priests
switch themselves with mirrors
in the confessionals.
In your petri dish,
the specimens wear tiny lab coats
and look up at you.
Even a decade long
Spanish soup opera
has a gateway episode
to let you in.
Even escaping to the stars
comes with instruction manuals.
Earth stills defies prediction.
Nana's throw their money down
to see grandkids go gladiator
on the school bully.
Be thankful you are born today
a generation or two ahead
of the technology that would have
picked our faulty genes
from our mother's womb
like a first level boss
of a iPhone strategy game.
Imagine the new mistakes
from that new perfect system.
There's still a chance
that the only awkward queer white boy
in a dance floor full of black lesbians
can sure play a mean pinball.
and will get a chance to show it
in the club's archaic section
of classic games
starving for quarters
to snap and spring them to life.
Trinity 2.0
is a goddess singing group
just starting out. One asks
if the other two can sing.
If you have a question to ask tonight
it will be the thing to save yourself
in a landmine of answers
you're rehearsed over a lifetime.
Special thanks to Surat Lozowick, Annie Moriondo , Erik Nelson, Big Poppa Ben, Martha Boss, Mary Geisser, Colin Killick, Shifra Freewoman, Bryan Maan, Rachel Copans, Hannah Brown and everyone else in attendance who read or just listened.
