Stone Soup Croutons, 2-8-16, "This Better Not Be Like Last Time or Else It Will Be"

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked up from poems overheard from Stone Soup's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title either then or later. It's likely some of the poets I thank at the end won't even be able to figure out which lines were inspired by their work. To paraphrase Lorne Michaels, the poem doesn't go up because it's good; it goes up because it's Tuesday morning.

Sharley Paul was last night's wonderful feature. Apologies to her for being dumb enough to not cancel Stone Soup due to the weather. Apologies to the rest of you for the poem.

This Better Not Be Like Last Time
or Else It Will Be

You're dumber than you're brave.

The man who overcame his fear
of falling into spiked pits
lies dead in a spiked pit,
broken bones marking
each twelfth step.

Buddha by the road
wants you to get it over with
and kill both him and yourself.

A clone is being uploaded
with the magic you never had,
or do you have what it takes
to be you own best version.

Heaven is a drink of alcohol
you've never allowed yourself
because you're not even
that brave or dumb.

If you don't choke on vomit
someone will be by eventually
to stab you and rid you
of your fear of knives.

Poetry hates you too.
Poetry hates you more.

Your muse and your way home
are both missing.

This is not coincidence.

Thanks, Michael Konan, for taking the number one slot again.

Special thanks to Michael Konan, Neal Katz, LUCCI, man the storm, Jonathan J. Joseph, Sharley Paul, Toni Bee and Chris Fitzgerald.
