If my Dad was alive today, he'd be turning 73 today and, probably in the middle of living his dream as a wandering consultant, spending part of the year with Mom out of the country.
He would also be voting for Donald Trump, who he admired.
He also admired Bill Clinton (even sported his haircut for a time) and Barack Obama when he spoke at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
Sometimes I ponder his tastes until I realize I possess a mind that enjoys Tony Hoagland's poetry, Public Enemy, the Watchmen graphic novel, Songs for Drella by Lou Reed and John Cale, and the match between Macho King Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior in Wrestlemania 7.
Sometime this month, I should take a drive to Pete's Bluebird Lounge in Bellingham, where Dad and I sometimes ate their famous steak dinners when I was home for the holidays and the kitchen was off limits. I should have a meal there. Sit afterwards. Mull over what imaginary conversation he and I would be having now about the election. Remember the one time during an argument when he offered to put me through law school, admiring my tenacity in debates if not my talking points. Wonder how long it will be before some townie comes up to me and asks me if I'm Roger's kid.
