The Poetry Porch 2019 is looking for
submissions: poetry,
essays, stories, reviews. Poetry and prose pieces will be
considered for
publication.
The suggested theme is storgē (Greek: στοργή), the tender love for a teacher, after eros, agape, and caritas, and before philia (friendship) and xenia (hospitality). If eros is love as the forceful motivator, agape, a generous love for humankind, and caritas the love that seeks benefit for humankind, storgē is a tender affection for someone familiar. I’m thinking particularly about the bond between teacher and student, but it might be an affection for a relative or neighbor or community leader, someone who seems to further an unforced harmony in friendship. C.S. Lewis calls it the empathy bond. Milosz exemplifies it in his anthology of poems A Book of Luminous Things, in a poem on teaching a class about fragments, another on washing a father’s shirt, still another on observing the habits of one who is blind.
How many of us have experienced a unifying affection for a teacher who has opened doors for us, or a mentor who stayed by us as circumstances changed suddenly? Does our trust in guardian angels still exist? Would we recognize one? Some of us might have experienced a treasured relationship sour or lose its happiness qualifier and begin to smother.

Poems: send 3 to 8 poems. We are looking for poetry that is formal or informal, that adheres to strict meter and rhyme or experiments with them, that is personal or objective, classical or modern, urban or pastoral. These should be original and not previously published.
Essays and Stories: These can be 300 to 4000 words in length and on a topic that we agree is literary and that shows an engagement with language.
Sonnets: We are interested in original unpublished sonnets to add to The Sonnet Scroll.
Reviews: Critical reviews (300 to 1500 words) of first books of poetry, collections, groups
of books, and chapbooks. Book reviews can discuss a current publication or introduce a book published in the past that might have been overlooked or that will justify a reconsideration. We suggest that the reviewer state what the author has set out to do and discuss how well he or she has done it, quoting specific examples from the original.
