My Mom took this picture Tuesday. Smokey had double cataract surgery a while back. Complications happened this week, including glaucoma. Even with phone pics like this one, my doctor colleagues took a look at his eyes and knew the diagnosis wasn't good.
Long story short, Smokey now has two detached retinas. He woke up yesterday blind and crying. It's nearly twenty-four hours later, and he is now resting quietly following an all-day visit to another doctor.
Fun fact. The animal eye doctors--including the one Smokey was seeing prior to this--are now at a conference. In Hawaii. Thankfully one of the doctors who stayed behind worked with the doctor who operated on Smokey.
My Mom has already set up a game plan for Smokey getting around. My aunt (who had a dog that went blind) and the new doctor were encouraging her that Smokey could adapt. My Mom helped my sister and her mother when they needed help getting along. This is in her wheelhouse.
I'll be heading down tomorrow night to visit and help if I can. I don't know if I'll be sharing any video or photos, at least for now. Never say never, but it's going to be tough when I see him for the first time in weeks.
