Last weeked marked the anniversary of Gary Hicks' passing. Maybe someday I'll find that Christmas poem he read at Stone Soup Poetry one year. For now, all I have is what he gave me to publish in my old online journal Spoonful. Check out "in dubious battle: notes on my twentieth birthday in new hampshire."

Gary Hicks passed away in December. I wish I had written a tribute for him at the time as he was someone who I appreciated for his counsel when I was just starting to handle hosting at Stone Soup Poetry. I've tracked down one of him poems published after he left Boston for the west coast. Read "Herod's Descendants" and "Hospital Doodlings" up at Revolutionary Poets Brigade.

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked from Stone Soup Poetry's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here.

Our anniversary month is over. Gary Hicks performed this Wednesday, which was phenomenal. I am tired and in need of a few days off and recharge my batteries. Sadly, to quote Spock, I shall do neither. At least I'll be writing throughout the weekend.

Even though this week's poem is more nonsensical than usual and is hanging by a thread, I'm glad that thread is in part its title inspired by Gary's refrain in one of his signature poems (which became a refrain at The Cantab). Thanks for reading.

Bravo to Gary Hicks for an outstanding feature last night. Though we didn't get to see him due to a broken camera, his voice was loud and clear. Thanks to everyone who attended Stone Soup throughout its 50 year celebration this month. More to come!

May 26: Mr. Hicks Returns to Stone Soup Poetry

When I was recording Gary Hicks reading at The Cantab in 2009, I never expected it to be his least reading there. Even when he left Boston, I always expected to see him return to The Cantab Lounge at some point. Sad to say it never happened. The Cantab is now gone, but at least one of Boston's poetry homes survives. Once again by the magic of Zoom, Gary Hicks joins this Wednesday us as we close out Stone Soup's fiftieth anniversary celebration (for now).
