For the last Wednesday of National Poetry Month, I'm featuring Jennifer Martelli, another recently lost local poet. Read her poem, "To Be Stevie Nicks Cool" over at New Ohio Review.

Features I'm Grateful for in 2025: Jennifer Martelli

I wanted to feature Jennifer for a while.  She was this year's very first feature. I can't believe we had to lose her so soon afterwards. It's just not fair.

 

 

Tribute

Another Gathering of Micro Marvels

My poem "Every Modern Schlep Love Poem Abridged" is in the thirteenth issue of Molecule. The issue is dedicated to the late Jennifer Martelli and includes work from her as well as several other friends and colleagues including Robert Fleming, Laurie Rosen, Robbie Gamble, Lynn White, Chrissy Stegman and many more. Thanks to Founders/Editors Kevin Carey and M.P. Carver for the opportunity to be part of their journal for a second time this year.

This morning, I read from numerous people that Jennifer Martelli is gone.

 I scrambled for a photo, searching the Boston Poetry Marathon archives. 

Then I remembered she couldn't attend this year. That hurt at the time.

Jennifer Martelli featured this past Wednesday. It was sad and wonderful and ominous. Just as a pre-Trump presidency reading should be. Especially the second time around. 

 

I tried to keep some of the serious tones of Jennifer's reading and the open micers' choices intact in the poem. I'm afraid it comes across as nonsense. Linear thought is almost not enough to contain pre-Trump anxiety. 

 

People will be either celebrating or waiting out Trump in smug isolation, but I'm not, and I appreciate the others who aren't. 

 

I also respect the people who are waiting out or even hiding for the next four years with incredible trepidation. At least you're smart enough to know why you're afraid. 

None of this intro has much to do with the poem. Or maybe it does. I'll let you decide.

This past Wednesday, Stone Soup returned with an all open mic. It was great to be back and reunite with everyone.
