YesNo Press Is Still at Work: Meet Mary Ann Honaker

The Zig Zag Poetry Open Mic may be gone, but the press that published Zig Zag Folio, YesNo Press, is still kicking around and putting out chapbooks.  This is exciting news given the next project.

Mary Ann Honaker has been in the poetry scene for a while.  If you hang out in Salem or Cambridge, you may have heard her read on an open mic.  She's been published in Oddball Magazine once or twice as well as many other places.   When I was holding poetry workshops at Stone Soup last year, she sometimes attended with one or two early versions of the poems that make up her new chapbook, It will Happen Like This.

I hope to have Mary Ann feature at Stone Soup with this chapbook soon.  Until then, you can start to whet your curiosity by reading a sample from the chapbook here.

So Zig Zag on the second week of the month only for a while.  I hope that's very temporary.

March 24: Stone Soup Answers, "Who Is Clay Ventre?"

Clay Ventre is a mystery to people outside Stone Soup. He is never filmed or photgraphed while reading on the open mic. And this coming Monday will be no exception. You must be in attendance this Monday to see why I've been waiting to give Clay a feature for quite some time. Trust me, it will be worth it.

February 24: Jeff Savlon and all his Unimaginary Friends at Stone Soup

I love featuring poets from the north shore.  I've come to dub their representation the North Shore Invasion, and this Monday will be no different.  The Zig Poetry Open Mic in Salem has recently released two chapbooks through it's YesNo Press.  Jeff Salvon is one of them, and his Foul-Mouthed Imaginary Friends will be available for sale when he features this Monday.  Get there early and experience some new poets.  Incidentally, Emily Rudofsky and her YesNo chapbook Ravenous, will be featured sometime in the summer.  Many exciting things coming down the pipeline at Stone Soup.

June 24th: CA Conrad Visits Massachusetts, Checks In at Stone Soup First

I'm glad this is finally coming together. Stone Soup worked with two other venues to bring the amazing and prolific CA Conrad up from Philadelphia for a mini-tour of Massachusetts. Thanks to the Zig Zag Poetry Open Mic and Speak UP: Spoken Word for doing the lion's share of the work. If you're ambituous, you can follow this link to CA's site and find out his entire schedule from the 24th to the 26th. If you want to see at least CA Conrad kick this tour off, come to Stone Soup this Monday!

April 29th: Scott Jacobs Finishes National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month had a great beginning and a really sad middle due to local events.  I hope I can make up for that with a really strong ending.  Enter Scott Jacobs, a poet who is one of the quiet forces behind the Zig Zag Open Mic in Salem.  A man so humble, his bio can also work as a tweet!  Those of you lucky to have heard him on our open mic and other venues in the North Shore will know to be in the audience this Monday.  The rest of you I hope will act accordingly.  And speaking of Zig Zag, this Thursday, the Zig Zag people bring their contingent of the North Shore invasion to Jamaica Plain this Thursday!

This Thursday: Zig Zag Goes to Jamaica Plain

Happy Birthday, Clay Ventre!

Clay pretty much refuses to be filmed and have his soul spread across the internet, so I will promote the series he champions.

January 28th: The North Shore Invasion of Stone Soup Continues With M.P. Carver

The North Shore poets continue to invade Stone Soup and the Boston poetry scene with next Monday's feature by  M.P. Carver.  There will also be another writing workshop before the show.  Since last year, Carver has been gracing our open mic with wonderful "covers" of other works.  Eventually, she started reading her own work, building up interest for her upcoming collection, Angry Little Poems.  She has also been active as part of the Zig Zag Poetry Open Mic (incidentally, the Zig Zaggers are accepting submissions for Volume 3 of their Folio series).  A trip to Stone Soup this Monday is a way to thank her and the north shore for their continuing contributions to our scene.  In addition, I'll be slipping Carver money to reserve my copy of Angry Little Poems from Yes/No Press.  I suggest you do the same.
