A Moment of Comics

I'm in the middle of  reviewing a fantasy comic that reminds me of Smax, the fantasy send up by writer Alan Moore and artist Zander Cannon, who got to let loose after working for so long with Gene Ha's pencils on Top Ten (also written by Moore and featuring Smax). This page is from Smax #3 from Wildstorm/Americas Best Comics. "How...many...dwarves?" always cracks me up.

A Moment of Comics

John Cassaday passed away earlier this week. People have been posting his pages from Captain America and Astonishing X-Men. These are good choices, but despite Warren Ellis' fall from grace, Planetary deserves to be in print forever. Cassaday was at his best when he was creating his own worlds. If it wasn't for Cassady, comics in the early 2000's would have been far less interesting.

He seemed to work exclusively on covers after Astonishing X-Men. That move was smart, but then we missed pages like the one above from the groundbreaking Planetary #1, written by Ellis, drawn by Cassady. Laura Martin's colors can't be overlooked either. RIP, Mr. Cassaday.

A Moment of Comics

Even at the turn of the century, superheroes took apart Nazi ideologies between punches to actual Nazis. And of course, the proto alt-right were trying to move the goal posts even then ("Our purity is an ideal...") Incidentally, this is a page from Tom Strong #4. Written by Alan Moore, penciled by Chris Srpouse and inked by Al Gordon.

A Moment of Comics

Last week during Thanksgiving with my family, someone recommended investing in AI. This Jack B. Quick story from Tomorrow Stories Special #1 by Alan Moore and Kevin Nowlan still has my favorite line on the subject. "[W]hy go lookin' for artificial intelligence when we already have genuine stupidity?" Today, a story where people convince themselves to obey an artificial being of questionable intelligence they have to carry around in a wheelbarrow doesn't seem as farfetched.
