Working on the found poems from the letters I found. I get the feeling that these letters won't be stand alone poems. Still, to make them all one big poem with sections may work out better than I first thought, as I found that two letters are actually back to back correspondence. Was one unsent, or taken back when one friend passed away? I may never know. They are both included here.
Dear Susan
Hi Chumm
Wrote you a letter last week
found it yesterday
just written 3 letters
might as well keep on--
Was awfully glad
to get your epistle
(and surprised!)
So glad you had such a swell vacation
Mine was pretty good too except
I didn't go to "Spring Prom" - darn it!
Susan, something wonderful has happend
Remember John Riley -
the one I write to every week
and exchanged pictures with?
Jane, his sister, has just come back
from Mississippi
with her mother
and told Pat McOwen
(Jane tells Pat + Pat tells me)
that he really likse me (I hope!)
I think he is swell
but have to see him again
(have a date on his next furlough)
Jane O'C and I had one of those "talks"
By golly
she is going to be 20 in August
and knew less than we did in 7th grade
when we started--
Her sisters won't tell her anything!
She juust learned last year
when her sister lost her 3rd child
how they were born!
I just sat there and gasped!
I didn't tell her much
She scares easy.
I got terrible marks and
and school started today
Turned over new leaf
Really studying
It's 12:45 AM
Dear Janie
The school just heard
President Rosevelt's death
How did they take the news in New York?
It made me feel so good
to see people crying over his death
that were against him
in the election
quite a shock to the school
So many
whose fathers depend on him
and who know him for a friend
It was a riot to hear about
Jane O'C
You sounded like a grandmother to her
Gosh! Almost 20
This week
tests that don't have to be studied for
loads of free time
this afternoon I played
tennis for 2 hours
After the first few balls I fell as if I'd been to
Hades and back again
