I'm a Batman fan, make no mistake. However, if you take the psyche of the character to its logical end, the results are not exactly positive. Think of that
Kingdom of The Blind story from
Marshall Law. And
this comic from Josh Simmons I posted to a Batman worshiper's Facebook wall once, thinking he'd get the joke. It was removed within minutes. Tell me what you think.

Isn't Simmons' take on Batman really in line with the whole post-Frank Miller take, anyway?
Yes and no. It's a logical extension of the Miller take, but Simmons takes out all of the "coolness" out of being a crazed loner.
What's "cool" about the Frank Miller take on Batman (at least in Dark Knight Returns) is the formalism of the work, and fact that Miller was still at the top of his game as a writer, not the character.
Morrison's Batman is way cooler but also neither crazed, nor a loner.
People would argue it's the character, but I definitely see your point. I think you and I can agree that obsession looses any vestige of romanticism after a while. That's why I love Josh Simmons' version, and that's why the comics geek I mentioned above took it down, possibly screaming at the screen while doing so.
Of course, there are a lot of fans out there who hate Morrison's take on Batman, because the stories are weird, and because his Batman actually has to do a lot of detective work, or occasionally does kind and compassionate things. Point is that that's a much easier Batman to admire once one has moved beyond moody adolescence.
