30 Questions/30 Days, Day 8

Sorry for the lateness.  Just got back from co-featuring at Stone Soup.

Ariel Mignon King returns with another question.  Why?  Well, I only had 7 questions near the end of March, and it occurred to me that I'm not very popular, so when she asked if she could submit another, I said, "What the hell."

Annnnd we're back to another song-related question.  Yyyyyeahhh.  Here goes:

"War, good God, ya'll...what is it good for?"

Well, the answer is simple and unsettling: Me, for starters.

Since late 2004, I have worked at my local V.A. hospital.  I am no doctor, but I was truly blessed to be hired and trained to a technical position that I now teach others how to do.  I am far from pro-war and had my share of activism some years back.  The fact that I came to work with veterans for the government was an odd turn of events for me.  To top it off, I am part of a field that would not exist today if it weren't for the money given to research used to better aid veterans.  That money created my current job, which helped me stop living in squalor with roommates and get my own place.

I suppose it's appropriate.  People who were conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War became medics or clergy.  Still, it's strange for me to be in the belly of the so-called  beast after my previous years of hanging with people who would laugh whenever Bill Clinton was called a socialist.  At least I know I'm far from the only anti-war, anti-G.W. worker in the mix.  There's also a bunch of pro-war, anti-Obama people in the workplace, but thanks to strict polices regarding campaigning and politicking, we can set differences aside and work together, often pleasantly).

I am smack dab in the world of government, where they allowed me to learn a trade and still be me.  I can even be productive and creative towards a genuine good.  That's a good side of America a lot of us don't see.  I know I'm lucky.

Okay, that was a more serious answer than anyone probably wanted.  Let's skip to the end and round things off with a Edwin Starr video.
