Rachael Eisenberg kicked off June for Stone Soup. A solid reading with a solid open mic.
I regret not getting the comics into my mix. Apologies to Reece Cotton, who is featuring next Monday, and Lady Vain, who I'm told will be there next Monday as well.
The only other thing to note is that I announced my frustration over spot 1-4 on the open mic list always being left open. If that happens next week, I promise to crumble up the open mic list and start over until the first spots have names next to them.
All of this is to say that this introduction might be more interesting than the poem. Oh, well. I had fun anyway. Enjoy.
Trails
The girl you wrote songs to
turned in her ticket to live,
revoked in graffiti on abandoned
architecture, for the people
to notarize in lieu of lawyers.
Kaleidoscope patterns
mark the end, her life's equation
left to y without anyone knowing
the x of reason.
Only the ozone blinks
to mark her passing,
though weeks later the bus seats
she would occupy will be left empty.
Love and lust will circle
her favorite bar stool,
only to go home with each other
and stay up all night, not wanting
to be left alone.
Rivals who would turn each other in
will share a cup of coffee
in a diner booth until thrown out.
Outside, the city lights
morn her as one of their own
A true timeless thing
that technically should not
have ended. That's how you know
the choice was hers.
And he who is now
on the flight of steps
where she first fell and where
he first christened her "baby"
will tap his arms own veins
in hope s of finding her pulse.
He'll try to find the path back
to the "us" he called him and her,
nothing left to fill emptiness.
