Submission Guidelines for The Tenth Anniversry Warrior Writers Anthology

Dear friends,

In celebration of Warrior Writers' ten year birthday--a decade of ongoing writing workshops, public performances, and creative opportunities for veterans--we're publishing a book!
We are now accepting submissions of original writing and artwork by veterans and service members (any era) who've participated in Warrior Writers programming. We welcome creative writing of any genre and visual art of all kinds. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2017.

Because this is a themed book, the writings and artwork should respond to the prompt: Ten years later.

Of course, this prompt may be loosely interpreted. Your writing can touch on military training, deployment experiences, coming home, reintegration, love, dreams, imaginings--anything that illustrates the nature of your experiences in the U.S. military and/or as a veteran. Surprise us! We want this to be a dynamic book, with diverse perspectives and viewpoints on military service and what comes after.

Submission Guidelines

Please read all guidelines before emailing inquiries or submitting (link can be found at the end).

We will accept 2 submissions per veteran. To be eligible for publication, veterans must have participated in Warrior Writers (a workshop, performance, retreat, etc.). Before submitting, please have at least two people proofread your work. The combined length of all written submissions should be no more than 800 words. Submissions should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt font. Please include your name, email address, and a title on each submission. Include the genre of each piece you submit (poetry, fiction or nonfiction).

Visual art and photography submissions must be at least 220 dpi for print, but higher quality is preferred. Please be aware that your work will likely be printed in black and white. Your submissions must be .doc, .rtf, .pdf, or .jpg. Let us know if you have any questions about formatting: members@warriorwriters.org.

Please include a short biography written in third person (beginning with your name; under 50 words) about your service and what you do now. In order to verify your service, we may ask that you submit a copy of your DD-214 or military ID (please withhold your SSN).

Submission does not guarantee publication. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and, if accepted, submitters will be contacted by a professional writing mentor who may offer suggestions for improvement. Submitters must respond to all correspondence from the Warrior Writers staff and mentors in order to be published in the anthology.

We are not accepting any work that has already been published in a Warrior Writers anthology. Material that has been published on our website or blog (if it fits with the above theme) is acceptable, but you must follow the guidelines and formally submit it for publication. If the work has been previously published, you must include the necessary permissions from the other publication.

You will not be financially compensated for contributing to this book--but you will be supporting the Warrior Writers mission of showcasing veteran artwork and building community through the use of art, helping to spark dialogue about war and its consequences. The book will be given away to veterans participating in workshops, sold to supporters and family members. Proceeds will go toward hosting more free writing workshops and creative opportunities for veterans. You will receive 2 copies of the book upon printing, sent to the address you provide.

Please submit here.
