Stone Soup Croutons, 7-31-17, Prison Broke

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions butchered picked up from poems overheard from Stone Soup's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here. To paraphrase Lorne Michaels, this poem doesn't go up because it's ready, it goes on because it's Tuesday morning.

Last night, Stone Soup held it's open mic. I posted the open mic a week ago(via the link), but I forgot to post events on Facebook and Meetup ( I've had problems regarding my maintenance lately) Then I got to the event a half hour late due to at least one broken down number 1 bus.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a full house.

I appreciate not only Dexter Roberts and Toni Bee for getting the show started but previous July feature Russell Bennetts for visiting Stone Soup one last time before leaving Boston. Not to mention other previous July feature  Zachary Bos helping to recommend Stone Soup to many people this month (including at least to more voices passing through Boston). There was a fantastic mix of voices last night that fed today's poem. Let's get to that now.

Prison Broke

Do not pass no
Do not collect real money
or Bitcoin
to take you out of
your personal prison.

You celebrate poison pizza Friday
and Marigold Monday,
replacing the flowers
you threw up on before

The weekend was with Charlie Sheen
visiting you from the moon,
eating his dog food
though he is freer than you.

You are immune to summer magic
but not its heat that weights you down
in sleepless sleep,
pretending you dream of malls,

not an autumn in August
which actually happens.
The rising star grows cold
making all men in the moon
reconsider their real estate,

an event as unlikely
as rolling aces and eights on dice,
the sun so weakened
calling for help
in such a slow drawl
you finally understand it's language.

You swear you can decode
the history of light
and what came before it
and whether you can trace
its steps back,
but a ticket back
to home before home.

Apologies to Paul and Mollie Chandler for missing their sets.

Special thanks to Paul, Mollie Chandler, Peggy Nelson, Deb Priestly, Bil Lewis, Nancy Messom, Melissa Silva, Martha Boss, Russell Bennetts, Evan Cutts, Toni Bee, Dexter Roberts, Erik Nelson and El Habib Louai.
