Your Wednesday Morning Poetry

William J. Barnum passed away in 2019. I miss his existence in our world. Sadly, this is another poet whose work isn't online very much. In fact, nearly all his work online is because of me. Some of his work is on the old Stone Soup online journal Spoonful, Some of it is on my YouTube. Today, I'm focusing on this excerpt from his poem “Pierrot, The Wanderer,” courtesy of Oddball Magazine, which I also edit.

RIP Mick Cusimano

Mick Cusimano passed away last weekend, and the first thing I felt was regret.

Among my on-hold Stone Soup history projects, I wanted to reach out to recording artist Tracy Chapman. Why? Because of this written account from Mick on his website on the early days of Fire of Prometheus:

Bob Johnson's tribute to Bill Barnum

From the Bill Barnum memorial on August 30, 2019 at the First Parish in Brookline, Massachusetts. Bob was Bill's caretaker for nearly a decade and was present for most of Bill's appearances at open mic venues. The video for this eulogy was damaged while being transferred. Luckily the audio was salvaged and accompanies these photos of Bill during the last years of his life, always in the audience, always performing.

SAFE DISTANCE EDITION - Stone Soup Croutons, 9-8-21: Bill Barnum's Prison Talk

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked from Stone Soup Poetry's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here.

I also have a book out now collecting the best of my first year of poems. Click here to purchase it.

Meg Smith gave us a great feature on Wednesday. This summer was so rough, I forgot things like the second anniversary of Bill Barnum's death. It surprises me we haven't heard a Bill Barnum reference until Jan Rowe read an old Bill Barnum poem by James Van Looy. I just went from there.

My first Bill Barnum tribute poem was written days after his passing. He's due for another.

Disclaimer. Cats were referenced a bit during the open mic. I put that in this poem. I have no idea if Bil even liked cats, but he did write about them at least once. I also don't make any claims to Bill Barnum's philosophy. Instead, I take poetic license and create further apocrypha from Bill's larger-than-life persona.

That's all I have to say about this poem. Thanks for reading.

We Keep Going

Last month was the anniversary of Bill Barnum's passing. It's not too surprising for him to make an appearance in one of James Van Looy's poems, but it's still a pleasant surprise. Read the latest It's All One Thing from James, up now at Oddball Magazine.

John Pirolli aka Buddah (1950-2020)

On Thursday July 30, we lost John Pirolli. I never knew him by that name (on Facebook, he called himself Daemon Magus). He was better known as the intentionally misspelled Buddah, a poet  and would-be manager of Fire of Prometheus, whose numbers included local legend Bill Barnum.
