I completed the forms, physical, and blood work all during my time off. Now I can start my job next week...at the same place I've worked at for three years.
Let me explain. Back in '04, I was hired in a heartbeat by the VA, but only by being subcontracted through the New England College of Optometry. They have been looking to put me on the VA contract for a while. but that, as you can guess (this being a federal government job), is an arduous process.
The process started in April, when my job had to be posted so I could apply for it (it gets better).
By May, I was the only one who applied, and it still took until July to get the letter saying I was qualified for my own job, which I suppose is a relief.
Two Mondays ago, I got the offer letter. Today, the last of the health-related stuff was done, and I got my starting salary for the new contract confirmed (more than I had with the College).
All the recent hires in my department over the last two years, including a new boss, would say I got off light.
I don't feel excited as of yet. The extra money and added job security will be good, but there's something anticlimactic when all this running around keeps you in more or less the same place.
Plus, I'll miss Trish in NECO's Human Resources department. She was always a great help.
