Smokey is scheduled for surgery this coming Thursday. He's getting old and has long since retired from the crazy movies I used to make with him. In addition to losing his hearing, he has cataracts in both eyes.
My Mom, who has been working on this for a while. moved up his appointment, which turned out to be fortuitous. Recently, he's started to run into things. Two weeks ago, he was outside with my Mom while she did work in the yard. He ended up running into the street (something he has never done in his life) and could have gotten hit if a driver didn't stop in time. It's just not humane to keep him this way, only knowing my Mom is in the room via the vibrations from her footsteps.
Funny enough the vet used a lot of the same machines I regularly subject patients to at work. It helped my Mom calm down when I was able to translate the medical report. Short version: He's a perfect candidate for the cataract surgery with no eye problems aside from the cataracts and some vitreous degeneration.
Just wanted to give an update to everyone who has been following him all these years. I'll know more on Friday.
