The year 2020 marks 100 years since the
passage of the 19th Amendment giving 26 million women the right to
vote. While it failed to enfranchise women of color, it was a huge step
towards equality. We Did It For You! The Suffrage Story and Voting Today tells
the story of how women got their rights focusing on voting rights for
women and minorities, and it offers ways you can take action to ensure
we get out the vote in 2020! Be inspired to take action, from the
comfort of your living room. Q&A with cast and playwright
afterwards.
Cast members will be participating from cities and towns across the United States.
Marsha Getter, Massachusetts - "Sarah Grimke," women's suffrage
"I was of the generation that went to college to find a college-educated husband and maybe learn some skills in case I needed to go to work. Our chemistry professor said we shouldn’t be worried because the grade we got on our chemistry test wouldn’t matter when we were washing dishes and changing diapers. After that, I started reading Betty Friedan’s book The Feminine Mystique and Ms Magazine. I have a strong commitment to social justice which is what prompted me into joining the cast of We Did It For You!"
Adrienne Williams, Massachusetts - "Sojourner Truth"
, abolitionist, suffragist
“I was a special needs teacher, principal and founding member of the New Bedford acapella group UMOJA. I joined the cast to express and promote volunteerism, education, youth empowerment and leadership. I've played Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth and Pauli Murray. I'm doing this to encourage young people to raise their voices for a more just, equitable, compassionate society and to engage in community service and the political process."
Ginni Gordon, California - "Virginia Woolf," writer
"I like Virginia Woolf because she is outspoken and goes after what she wants. I remember being in that position when, with four kids, a house and a husband, deciding to go back to school full-time. I didn't receive a lot of encouragement, but I did it anyway. I wrote If Not Now When? to encourage people in their senior years. Too many women take the right to vote for granted."
