Stone Soup Croutons, 11-30-22: Plan Your Next Staycation

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked from Stone Soup Poetry's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here.

I also have a book collecting the best of my first year of poems. Click here to purchase it.

Stone Soup returned on Wednesday. I got back on the poem wagon this week. So glad to get so many people returning to share strong work. Oh, and Bil Lewis was holding a crab. Things like that happen when we get together.

To make things a little easier coming back, I challenged myself to write each line of this week's poem as an instruction or a declaration.

Maybe doing the prompt ruined my chances for a better poem. Maybe it didn't At least I had fun. Thanks for reading.

Plan Your Next Staycation

Haunt a house by leaving lights on.
Stab yourself for better spot on plane.

Take a water sprite a boat trip
dressed as hermit crab for best seats.

Losing sight of future gets best view.
Nothing is sacred except empty rows.

Save on meals with bread abandoned
by ducks. You could die sleeping

in overnight motel room. Double
down when writing in guest book.

Road music is your mecha armor
and giant robot laser weapon.

Bring pocket watch in subway
infested with digital clocks.

Save a bad temper for secret
bowling sessions in boxcars.

Pulp heroes will dictate therapy
while standing in line at airport.

Send all calls to voicemail. Dying
mother just trying to talk you down

from clouds. Trust no guide. Stick to
ruins found only in Hard Rock Cafe.

Forward wife's ashes to Disney hotel. Leave
kid's urns at home. why spoil them so soon?

Brush teeth before calling boss. Quit
job after listing travel expenses.

Learn a song you can use on the streets
to lull passersby into rob-able sleep.

To tune of "Chopsticks," plan getaway
like gas crisis before next election.
