Peter David passed away over the weekend. His influence on modern comics was undeniable from The Death of Jean DeWolff to his Hulk run to his run on X-Factor. Even after reading The Comics Journal polarized me against David and the mainstream, I would go back to his work often. While the quality of his work varied from artist to artist (as it does with most comics writers), I think his scripts, when he experimented with storytelling and pacing, brought out work from his collaborators they would never have tried on their own.
I think David's script for X-Factor #87 (where the team has individual counseling sessions with gamma-irradiated shrink Doc Sampson) was instrumental in establishing Joe Quesada as a breakthrough talent. Above is a page from the issue, written by David, penciled by Quesada and inked by Al Milgrom.
