People I Want to See Tonight at Stone Soup

David Miller

After tonight's feature with Tom Daley, David will be switching over to his theater work every Monday for the next couple of months. He's always missed. I should remember to film him tonight.

Janet Cormier

After doing his Bamboozled No More! column for the past year, Janet has been contributing to Stone Soup's open mic for the last month. I hope she keeps it up.

Jla

Even though she just had her Stone Soup feature last week, one should never rest on their laurels.

Stone Soup Croutons, 8-29-16, Rusted

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked up from poems overheard from Stone Soup's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. To paraphrase Lorne Michaels, the poem doesn't go up because it's good; it goes up because it's Tuesday morning. I've done fifty of them now, and you can read them here.

Jla was our last feature before Labor Day. This collage poet (my term) had some amazing finishers to her set, doing her trick of taking three words called out from the audience and forging a spoken word piece from them. The last one she did went on for several minutes of riffs. I hope she shares it with the rest of the world in the recording she made. She left me with a lot to live up to with this week's piece. Thanks for the challenge, Jla.

Edit: "Rusted" is available only from my first collection of Stone Soup Crouton poems, The Collapsed Bookshelf, available at Amazon.

Special Thanks to Dave Somerset, Chris Fitzgerald, Dennis Daly, David Miller, Nancy Messom, Martha Boss, Janet Cormier, James Van Looy and Jla.

August 29: Jla, Stone Soup and The End of August

I've called Jla a collage poet, an open mic phenom, and several other complimentary thing since she came on the scene. Now I finally get to call her our Monday night feature poet at Stone Soup. Jla will be coming to us on August 29 to help say farewell to our hottest month of the year and help segue our new season of Stone Soup in September. Jla thrives on your willingness to participate, so I hope you will all bring your a game when she asks for the audience to throw out words for her to turn into poetry. If you're good, she's better!

Stone Soup Croutons, 8-1-16, Evening Watch

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked up from poems overheard from Stone Soup's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. To paraphrase Lorne Michaels, the poem doesn't go up because it's good; it goes up because it's Tuesday morning. Unless I'm mistaken, next week will be my fiftieth poem in this series. What will I do then?

Out of town poet Mark Lipman featured last night. A small but tight open mic. A short but sweet Stone Soup. Here's the poem.

Evening Watch

The sky is forever wide enough
for all to fall from grace together,
coming apart in the wind
like the brittle flakes of black burnt bread,

Arms flailing as if to have us
wake up floating in the womb,
swimming in a shoreless blue.
