Took this picture the first night of the Boston Poetry Marathon, wrote this poem today post-Marathon morning.
Final Lap
Good tip for last run:
Never let anyone in
on your win
whether nighttime
sidewalk or
broadway daylight.
Bystanders
biplane swoop
over your high,
victories snatched
quicker than
good looks,
sincere smile
swiped off face,
lip buttons broken.
Hide prize
behind eyes
for fear of forfeit.
Home to hide
upheld head
atop pillow
before anyone
wakes to ask
how was the day.
