Chess club in high school never had a high attendance. One day of the chess tournaments, I doubt there were more than four of us in that room, including myself in my friend. We immediately moved up to the final round. My friend claimed he thought they were just going to continue the tournament another day when more people were there and he wasn't playing seriously. I assumed it was all down to this game. I won the Class B trophy pretty soundly. That seems to be the template to my life, people not taking me seriously and me surprising them.
