A Decade of Patron Emeritus

Last Sunday marked the first day my first ever full-length collection was made available from FootHills Publishing online. It is a book that would never have been created if not for a series of wonderful events that took almost a decade to bring me to the moment I never thought I would see as a poet.

Call for Submissions: Planet Crisis Poetry Anthology

We seek poems for an anthology to address the planetary crisis unfolding

around us.

Send poems that bear witness to our changing climate and humankind’s

part in causing the change. Send poems that show our consumer mindset,

our industries, street protests, politics and science. Send poems that

sound the alarm of species and habitat loss, new weather extremes, our

response and lack of response; how ecological ideals collide with the

challenge of changing habits and how we live. Send poems of grief or

fury, despair or hope. Send poems that show how we might yet save our Earth.

We want to showcase a range of voices and perspectives. We are looking

for well-crafted poems with emotional power and a richness of language.

Longer poems will be considered (make every line count).

Send one to three original, previously unpublished, poems. Send poems by

email attached as a .doc (or .docx or .txt only)

as a SINGLE ATTACHMENT of 1-3 poems.

Put your contact information (name, mailing address, email), the titles

of your three poems, and a one-line bio note (max. 25 words) in the body

of the email.

Contributors will receive one contributor’s copy of the anthology and

will be able to purchase additional copies at a 50% discount, plus shipping.

See My Work in The New Mo' Joe AnthologyI

I'm very lucky and thrilled to be part of this collection published by Beatlik Press and edited by John Roche, who gave over a hundred contributors the chance to feature their own versions of a "Joe Poem."

A "Joe Poem" is a a form Roche invented for his book The Joe Poems: The Continuing Saga of Joe the Poet, which was one of the funnest books I've read in the last few years.  Ten lines, no more than a hundred words, and the legendary Joe should ideally make an appearance somewhere in there.    John put Joe in different places, eras and even different bodies for his first collection from FootHills Publishing.  I dipped into recent history and local color to contribute "Joe the Poet and Billy Barnum" as well as "Joe the Poet at Occupy Wall Street" to the anthology. 

I'm so glad to appear alongside so many talents, including friends like Susan Deer Cloud and Doug Holder.  This is going to be as enjoyable a read for me as I hope it is for you.  Please grab this book while you can via this link and try to grab a copy of the first collection as well.

(The following text is from a  an email from Michael Czarnecki a couple of weeks back following the news that his family's house had burned down while the family was away, causing them to lose both their home and nearly everything related to Foothills Publishing including archives and production equipment.  Just to update, a later email related that they have been able to repurchase their production equipment.  Still, there is much to be done.  I urge all writing buddies (both tagged and untagged) to donate via the addresses below and pass this note on to anyone else who can help.)

First of all, many thanks and heartfelt gratefulness to all of you who have been responding with offers of help, good thoughts and prayers. We are humbled by the response.

First of all, we'll be arriving back home (ah, the hill is still home, whether a house is there or not) Sunday, mid- afternoon.  I'll go over briefly a bit of where we are at with needs etc.

Temporary housing - three different people have made available to us a small travel trailer and two campers. We should be getting those to the hill starting Monday. One fortunate thing is that this fire happened in summer. That certainly makes temporary living quarters a lot easier to work out.

Long Range Housing - Peter, a neighbor and the bishop of our Amish community neighbors, called and said the community would do a house raising for us (the house that is no longer was built by them) when we are ready. I told him the only problem with that will be the funds to buy the material. Long range plans here.

Clothing Donations - Again, being summer, clothing is a lot easier to deal with in the short term. Grayson lost most of his clothes, Carolyn, Chapin and I have the clothes we came to Acadia with. Most of our clothes come from Salvation Army stores and we prefer it that way. I think we'll be ok in the short term, so clothing donations aren't a strong necessity at the moment.

Financial Help - Being money poor, this is a big need. Once we return we have so many things we need to purchase to get back up and running. We'll need a new electrical system - generator, deep cycle batteries, inverter, etc. and also purchasing all new equipment to get FootHills back up and running. Also chainsaw, other tools. The list goes on and on. This doesn't even take into account what will be needed for more permanent housing. The campers will only be useful for a few months. The financial needs will be great. I'll be working hard on booking more work out as a poet, and we'll get FootHills going again, but even then, before all this, it was a continual struggle.

Foothills Publishing Tragedy

Yesterday, I found out that Foothills Publishing publisher Michael Czarnecki had a fire at his house nearly two weeks ago, losing his home and business.
