A Fall Poem for Mass Poetry's Raise Your Verse Fundraiser

This poem was written thanks to David Miller, who donated to my fundraiser for Raise Your Verse,. a six week fundraiser for Mass Poetry's programming. Any one who donates is encouraged to commission me to write a poem or, if there a poet, to send me a writing prompt. David sent this prompt:

"Take one line from the poem by someone else that you most recently read (as of the moment you see this). Include it in your poem."

It just so happens that I was beginning to read Twine, a chapbook by Martha Boss. I took the last line from the second poem in the collection ("some idea")  and used it to start the poem below. I tried to write it in a Martha Boss kind of way. Fans of her work will have to determine if I did a good enough job or not.

Thank you for reading, thanks again to David for donating, and please consider donating to Mass Poetry via my page.

Fall Back

This must be what the earth is thinking
after weeks of wishing it could curl itself

into a fetal stress ball, collapse into itself
like the universe is supposed to.

Finally a cool breeze. The sun,
after months of creeping up on you

earlier and earlier, like a petty boss,
has nothing left in him, can only pout

away under rows of obstructing clouds
he had no say in bringing in.

The radiation, like micromanagement,
turning your stomach in laps, is gone

without having to hear you beg mercy
before a committee of trees, spread

evenly apart on a long strip of road,
occasionally throwing you shade

on top of judging you're not harsh
enough to survive his supervision.

It's as if you've been paroled by God,
who you thank, remembering you heard

that the sun only is getting closer to the earth
and God may leave before things get worse.

Support the Fundraiser for Local Poet/Activist DiDi Delgado

Given the crowdfunding mania and its inevitable backlash, I assume most of you won't even click DiDi Delgado's Gofundme page created by her friends.  So here's the explanatory text in its entirety.

"DiDi Delgado is passionate and hardworking. She puts so much energy and love into others through her activism, poetry, friendships, and genuine care for humans.

DiDi is a dedicated humanist. Her love for her friends, family, and her people resonate through everything she does. Whether she advocating for POC inclusion in arts and culture, convening a political meeting, or simply reaching out to people to provide emotional support and affirmation, DiDi's dedication to others is so clear. Her heart and love for others can be seen with every move she makes.

Born with Third-Degree Atrioventricular Block, DiDi has never let her condition slow her down or prevent her from giving all of herself to others. Although at the age of 16, she received a pacemaker to save her life, she has unfortunately had to have several surgeries within the past 12 years to support her quality of life. Why so many surgeries when the battery is only supposed to be replaced every 10 years? As many of you know, she has excelled in weightloss, then struggled with it. The doctor's have all recommended she undergo the gastric sleeve to improve the rewards instead of constantly being subjected to the risks, such as yet another pacemaker implant. DiDi is scheduled to undergo surgery on April 13, 2015 and will be out of work for 6-8 weeks.

Always authentic, generous, and honest; DiDi needs our help now to ensure her a long happy healthy life. We've helped her calculate her expenses for the two month period she will be out of work and we are asking that you please help us support her in this endeavor.

Donating whatever you can is the least anyone can do for someone who does so much for everyone else; but specifically supporting DiDi's recovery is supporting liberation for all people.

- Love,
Crystal, Mukaji, Geri, Rachel, Abe, Hannah & Christina"

Okay, hopefully they convinced you, so click on DiDi's Gofundme page and donate something.
