Jack Powers as a Meanie Poet

Without getting into too much detail, I came into some artifacts of Stone Soup Poetry founder Jack Powers, which include publications his work appeared in. I remember this issue of Meanie from the spring of 1998. Sadly, I probably had to lose this during one of my many moves.

Saw this on his Facebook page. Wanted to post it here because I'm remembering back in the day when I could count on Jim Behrle posting something hilarious on one of the many blogs he used to have. 

Back then, it was either Blogger or Livejournal. I chose Blogger based on the sites Jim and his friends had. 

All those blogs are gone, and with social media being all proper now (when it's not courting Nazis), some of the zaniness has gone. 

Hope I run into Jim again someday.

Great to be Back on the ball back?

I remember the old days of  Jim Behrle's online journal can we have our ball back? When a new issue was announced, you would see a poem published every few days until the final issue was unveiled.

Jim has brought back his journal, and I'm proud to have two poems as part of the first issue in over a decade. Thank you Jim.

Our Ball is Back

can we have our ball back? was a poetry zine that existed back in the early 2000's. Created by Jim Behrle, it hosted a Shmorgishborg of poets like no other online journal of its time. You could see big names like Franz Wright and Robert Pinsky as well as nobodies like...myself!

Jim has brought back ball back? recently. He has also restored and archived all previous issues. Such an incredible flashback of work. You should read it now before Jim releases issue 21.0.

My own work appears in issues 9.0, 12.0 and 15.0 (which you can get to quicker by clicking here if you want). I was always grateful for Jim including my work since the days of his print journal Meanie. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Boston Poetry Marathon 2016

Jim Behrle and other organizers of the annual Boston Poetry Marathon sent me an email.

I've been asked to be a reader for this three day reading.

It's taking place from July 15-17. I'll let you know more information when I get it.

It was great to see Jim Behrle's "Live Poetry, Fresh Killed" on Hampshire Street for another weekend-long summer reading at Outpost 186.
 

And I always chuckle when I see the arrow to the Outpost and the event underneath the sign for...

Poetic!

Turned out the day I read we started out ahead of schedule. As near as I can tell, there was a filler name put in that never got replaced with a real person. Either that or Walt Whitman is very unprofessional. 

What??? That Whitman's name over mine???

 


Jim Behrle came dressed in what could only be described as his Ghostbuster outfit. Apparently, it was a reference to the TV show "Lost," but no one in the audience had any idea which character he was.

Friends were reacquainted.

Shoes were compared.

"I have another pair like this at home!"

Several pics were attempted with poor lighting. One exception was Sam Cha, who carried with him the unbearable brightnes of being behind in front of a window.

And I took one more black and white photo I liked.

The Poetry Marathon is Upon Us (August 14-16)

The "Live Poetry Fresh Killed" sign (as painted by Jim Behrle) can only mean one thing. It's time for another weekend at Outpost 186 as scores of poets pile into one place to share poetry along with body heat and all the odors that can come with that. Seriously, this is a fun three day jam session of poetry that shouldn't be missed. It's a bit of an endurance game, but if you can last through an average of eight poets an hour for a morning or afternoon segment, it will be most rewarding. Check out the schedule and see who you might want to see read. I go on this Saturday at 3:40. Special thanks to Jim Behrle, John Mulrooney and company for making this happen another year.
