Publications I'm Proudest of in 2023: The Arts Fuse

 

 

"Two Lane" was a poem documenting a hard time in my life. It took me seven years to find a home. I had a high opinion of it thanks to Ron Goba, who headed the workshop I was still going at the time. The fact that it was accepted by John Mulrooney at The Arts Fuse was high praise indeed. I hope I have another semi-regular home for work I'm really attached to.

"Carol Weston and the Boston School"  was an amazing experience. Thanks to all the Stone Soup regulars for attending this event. Event moderator John Mulrooney put it best: "I think this event, in addition to her forthcoming book from Bootstrap, could be the start of not only Carol getting greater recognition but might offer a new dimension to understand poetry and poetics in the city where Jack Spicer saw the ghost of Emily Dickinson float up the Charles River."

SAFE DISTANCE EDITION - Stone Soup Croutons, 3-17-21: Fools on Parade

Stone Soup Croutons is a weekly poem I write using lines and impressions picked from Stone Soup Poetry's open mic readers and features. I figure out a title (and sometimes the rest of the poem) later. You can read the other ones I've done since 2015 here.

John Mulrooney finally featured on Wednesday. It's something I've wanted for a while. It's weird to be thankful about the opportunities a pandemic brings, but I'll take it.

It was humbling to know that I have to work very hard if I'm ever going to write a Boston poem even half as good as John's work. I had no set plan with this poem, just a series of silly jokes. Somehow, it also became a Boston poem. And it also became kind of a Saint Patrick's parade poem (but only kind of). John's work has that affect on me. That's the only defense I have, your honor. 

Hey, it's still a series of silly jokes. After all, this is me we're talking about. Thanks for reading.

I've had the fortune of being in John Mulrooney's orbit since I started featuring at poetry events around Boston. He is a poet and filmmaker who has recorded the Boston Poetry Marathon throughout nearly all its forms and names. I've wanted him to feature at Stone Soup Poetry for years, but our schedules were always in conflict. Chalk it up to another victory for remote access. John steps up to Stone Soup's virtual podium on March 17. This time the tables are turned, the camera is turned towards him and we get to hear an extended set. This should not be missed.
