There are many women poets at Stone Soup Poetry who took on motherly roles on the open mic, presenting their best selves that urged the unruly rabble of males to do better. 

There was Joanna Nealon, who I proclaimed the First Lady of Stone Soup. Carol Weston was dubbed (again by me) as Our Lady Queen of Stone Soup. 

The recently departed Deta Galloway--poet, artist, singer--certainly served as a mother figure to some but seemed to me more of the fun aunt in our makeshift poetry family, just as likely to share wisdom with the younger members as she was to be up and partying with them.

Friends I DIdn't Connect wtih Enough in 2026: Toni Bee

 

Toni went through a lot in 2025. None of her story is mine to tell. 

I tried to support her as best I can, attending all the  BeeFound and Poets in the Garden events I could make. I'm so happy I could get her back into the Boston Poetry Marathon. 

I wish I could have been more present as the year was ending. I wish I had gotten Stone Soup back as a live event in 2025. I would have made sure she could have attended. 

I hate when I can't be a better friend. There was a lot of that this year. 

I hope to connect with her next week before New Year's Eve.

I hope the two of us get to feature in the same place in 2026.

Friends I Let Down in 2024: Toni Bee

 

Toni has never been anything but good to me. I loved our reading back in March. 

My follow through, however, has been piss poor. 

I missed her birthday when I took too much medicine to deal with a case of TMJ. 

She understood (and laughed), but it was a day with her I'll never get back.

The rest of the year has been a lot of planned and failed get-togethers. 

I really tried, but I also really failed. 

We spoke on the phone when we could, but she deserved more of my time.

I swear to be a better friend this coming year.

In August of this year the poetry community lost Glen LUCCI Furman ... to suicide... and many of us are affected!

The loss brings up deep feelings around others we have lost others too Let's gather on line so many can come.

We offer kindness, comfort and we deserve to share good memories of those we loved who we've lost."

New Goal for 2024

I need to get a selfie with Toni Bee for 2024. I missed her birthday party over the weekend due to taking too many muscle relaxers (aka the minimum dosage). This was taken back in 2017 from our feature at The Switch Co-Op's grand opening.
