The Lone Hydrangea

Yesterday my girlfriend looked out our window and saw one tiny hydrangea growing. It's as if after last year's heat killing off everything, our plants decided to sit out the sun this year with only one little bloom popping up as if to say, "is the nasty sun gone yet?" At least it's raining today.

A Belated Summer Victory

Translated form French: Exhibition until July 11, 2022- The Impressionistic Decor - At the sources of the Water Lilies

My girlfriend got this promotional poster framed.

This close-up image of Claude Monet's Chrysanthemums is from our recent Paris vacation.

It was one of a few souvenirs from our stop at the Musee de l'Orangerie. She thought it would look good hanging up in our home.

It was already rolled up and wrapped in plastic, but I had a bad feeling that it wouldn't survive in my checked baggage without getting ruined.

I carried it in my hand walking through the airport and kept it close to me on the plane back to Boston.

If I had kept it in my soon-to-be lost luggage, lord knows what condition it would have been in when I finally got it back.

There's not a lot about the summer I want to look back on, but seeing this picture every morning makes me happy.

Summer 2022 Highlights: The End

On Monday, I looked at the sky and smiled. A cloudy day reminding me of a fresh sheet of paper. A brand new start. Time to start something new.

Summer 2022 Highlights: Stone Soup Goes Live Again

After over two years, Stone Soup had it's first live show on June 8 with Jim Dunn. We continued with The Garage Poets on July 14 and then had to cancel August due to my girlfriend's injuries. Luckily, Ed Gault stepped in to host Miriam O'Neal's feature on September 14. The shows have been fraught with hurdles as I struggle to make Stone Soup a hybrid series and stream our live shows. I'm still figuring that out. If I'm lucky, I can continue to figure this out in the fall.

Summer 2022 Highlights: That One Night Outside

June 18. Not even summer yet. No drought in effect. No mosquitoes. Just an awesome night sitting outside. That's right. I'm picking a night before summer even started as a summer highlight.

Summer 2022 Highlights: Anita Cocktail

Anita's variety show in Provincetown was worth the trip. Sadly, there are no YouTube clips of her performing Pat Benetar's "We Belong." You'll just have to see the show and make a request.

Summer 2022 Highlights: Walking Through Provincetown

While getting to the boats, I got to take pictures of stickers like this one.

Summer 2022 Highlights: Paris in General

My last time in France, I felt we stayed in commuterville, but my girlfriend chose a perfect location this time around.

We still had to take the subway, but at least we got to stay in a legitimate community (felt like Allston) instead of a sterile district. It made traveling from place to place much more pleasant.

If we stay in France again, I think I'll be ready to navigate myself around the city, second language or not.

Summer 2022 Highlights: An American Poet in Paris

On June 30, I read at the Culture Rapide in Paris, France.

It was my first time reading in another country.

I wasn't able to read as a feature.

When I got there to sign up for the open mic, I was put on last.

I gave it my all. I might not be back for five years. Maybe longer.

Maybe I went too long. Maybe I went overboard.

I don't care.

I did what I had to do to make my spot count.

That was my only option.

I think it worked.

Someone asked if I was going to be around for an event next week.

Sadly, I had to leave that Monday.

I will not make that mistake if there is a next time.

Post-Summer Thoughts

If summer only lasted two or three weeks, then I would say this was the best summer in years.

Sadly, summer lasts three months.

My Summer's End Poem for 2022

Continuing my new tradition of writing a hay(na)ku to mark summer going bye-bye for another year.

Click here for the hay(na)ku poem I've posted every summer's end for a while.

Bye to Summer, 2022

Either
land on
hot, hot sand

or
aim straight
for wet rocks.

No
hope for
a third choice.

Blessed Leg Room

So thankful it's the end of both summer and the orange line shutdown. With everything that happened this year, how can you feel angry that summer is over without have some kind of mental disorder?

Summer is Over

Let God stop moving their tongue.
