Imagine you're fighting for your lives against fascism and your only ally judges you as fighting "too hard." To me the criticism that someone is "trying too hard" is a criticism from the privileged, from those who don't have to try at all, who have never had to put 100% of themselves into a goal. Researching the character of Bastion, who seems to be the main baddie from the "X-Men" '97 " cartoon. The worst thing you can do researching comics form the 90's is look up a character's first appearance. Bastion's first appearance/nonappearance comes X-Men #52, a hot 90's mess written by Mark Waid, penciled by Andy Kubert and inked by Cam Smith. Joe Casey was right. 90's X-Men were plagued by mysterious figures in shadows.
