My Friday Evening Music

Happy Birthday, Sinéad O'Connor.

Advent Calendar, Day Eight

Given Sinéad O'Connor's religious journey, seeing her sing a Christmas song seems odd. But what other holiday song am I going to post on her birthday?

My Monday Morning Music

Sinéad O'Connor's birthday is December 8. I planned to feature her this week before she died. Now we lost shane MacGowan. So here's the start of a tribute for both of them. First, Sinéad O'Connor covers "A Rainy Night in Soho."

Summer 2023 Sad Moments: Losing Sinéad O'Connor

So sad to have never seen her perform live. I was planning on posting Sinéad O'Connor material in the fall with the foolish hope she might find me online and strike up a conversation. So happy I got writers and artists to do tributes, including this amazing at from Donna A Black.

This Week's Friendly Reminder

Anytime you attack a trans person, you're doing what the hate-mongering rulers want you to do. Fight the real enemy, to quote the late Sinéad O'Connor. Man, this summer was rough.

My Friday Evening Music

Rest in peace, Sinéad O'Connor. We did you wrong.

My Friday Morning Music

I never realized that "I Want Your Hands On Me" was a song by Sinéad O'Connor until a few months ago. That was pretty stupid of me because I used to hear it as part of a 1988 MTV promo constantly. In the promo, the snippet of her song is almost rudely interrupted by Prince screaming (taken from a clip of the "Alphabet St." video). Given what we would hear about her and Prince decades later, that clip now seems darkly prophetic as "Nothing Compares 2 U" wouldn't be released until 1990.

From Us 2 U, Sinéad O'Connor

The last of our Sinéad O'Connor tributes is a sestina by Tom Driscoll. I am very grateful to new contributor Donna A Black for her phenomenal artwork accompanying Tom's work. Thanks to both of them, and thank to you all for reading these tributes over at Oddball Magazine.

From One O'Connor to Another

The first of today's Sinéad O'Connor tributes this Wednesday comes by was of Shannon O'Connor (no relation). Read her flash fiction piece (which also includes her photography) and welcome to Oddball Magazine today.

My Monday Morning Music

Getting this done early. Sinéad O'Connor passed away last week. Starting today, I'll be featuring a selection of her songs in memoriam. "The Emperor's New Clothes" is probably my favorite from her with "Mandika" being a close second. Many of the song's lyrics ("Everyone can see what's going on/They laugh 'cause they know they're untouchable/Not because what I said was wrong" sound like they could have been written right after the backlash from her tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II.

My Friday Evening Music

"Three Babies" was the third single form Sinead O'Connor's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. Saw this video with it's striking imagery once on MTV. Never saw it again until today. I guess America couldn't take another slow Sinead O'Connor so soon after "Nothing Compares 2 U."
