Thanks to Toby Altman for featuring alongside his other poet friends in the Boston area. We had a strong list of features and a strong open mic. I hope it comes out in the poem I wrote.


Down from the Mountain

Why do we hold the pin
for x amount of angels
to dance on?

Place the pins
on their celestial domes.
Put the pressure on them.

Just getting back from vacation, it was good to have Kirk Etherton hosting the open mic last night. I ended up kicking back a little and piecing together a poem that was more than a little influenced by yesterday's hearing. Given that Kirk's requested theme was on nature and the seasons, I think a little of that got in here too. Here's what I came up with.


Tapping Out

Privacy is anything your partner
already knows, pretending they don't

The space between your nose
and the book you're trying to read in secret
is all the government needs
to know what you've learned.

March 20: Kirk Etherton Hosts Tonight's Stone Soup Open Mic

I apologize for the lack of my posts last week. I went away for a couple of days, but thankfully, in case I couldn't make it back, I arranged for Kirk Etherton to host tonight's open mic. Kirk has been helping out with Stone Soup since late last year. I will be there in the audience, as we'll all be in good hands tonight.

Last night's open mic was our own personal parade, a chance to voice whatever we wanted to as if we were given the mic at the upcoming victory parade. It was a small but nice rally, and I did my best to join in, even if after the fact. Yes, there's Trump in here, but I think I got it out of my system.

Extreme Setting 

Kicking sand in our face
produces no pearls
to pry from our mouths.

Another open mic night, another poem about Trump. Maybe it's because there was a Million Women's March in Washington. Maybe it was the endless "p---y" references from more than one poet. At any rate, here we are. This actually feels even more like a regular poem if only for the amount of times I went back and edited, more than usual because I got up very early this morning. Thanks for reading.

I could say that it was just another just another open mike last night, but there's no such thing as just another open mic when it comes to Stone Soup. Plus, it's a matter of days before Trump's inauguration happens, so everyone had plenty to say. Kudos to Kirk Etherton for helping to start things off.
