My First Publication of Fall

Marking the Day

I published my poem, "Riot Acts," six days after the riots, thanks to Michael Broder and Indolent Books. It was part of his Transition: Poems in the Afterglow series. It was meant to be more optimistic than the previous What Rough Beast era that ended after the 2020 election. Events like January 6 (and pieces like mine) are likely why the Transition series didn't last.

New Series from Indolent books

Michael Broder has started A River Sings, a new series on his website. 

From the Submittable page:

Beginning January 20, 2021, the Indolent Books website will publish a poem-a-day to celebrate the resurgent spirit of truth, justice, and democracy that awoke in our nation at noon on that day. We want poems about what we are seeing, hearing, thinking, feeling, hoping and fearing at the dawn of this historic presidency. Let's use poetry to engage in a rich and layered conversation about the ongoing polarization of this nation and the opportunities bringing the nation and its people together, for moving forward, for making a difference.

There's not an easy link from the home page to the page and the poems published so far, but it's there.

Capping it Off

My poem "Riot Acts," written one day after last week's riot at the Capital,  is up at Transition: Poems in the Afterglow. This is likely the last time I will be part of an Indolent Books web page for the foreseeable future. I was lucky to contribute to What Rough Beast since 2017, and it was a blast. Thanks to Michael Broder for the years of opportunity.

Things I'm Ambivalent About in 2020: My Indolent Books Blog Work

I really doubled and tripled down with the "Jesus Tanka" contributions I made to What Rough Beast. Only now I'm left with a lot of Tanka that many not have a home in any collection. I hope Indolent Books consider collecting them (along with some new ones I could write to countdown to the end of Trump's regime (or the beginning of the new phase of his new regime).
 

The upside down flag banner was a source of aggravation between me and others who reported on my posting links to What Rough Beast. When Michael Broder started the Transition: Poems in the Afterglow segment, seeing the flag right side up was almost bittersweet. I hope to contribute at least one more poem before January 20.

If the tanka never get used again, I'll have to accept it. When you write political works, you will have to accept that some of your work is going to be lose its timely luster and fade into obscurity. I just hope it can live just a little longer.

Still Keeping Timely(ish)

My Editor is a Fan of Donald Trump's Work

Now that I have your attention, calm down and read Michael Broder's review of the recently re-released and completely unauthorized The Beautiful Poetry of Donald Trump. 

His review is up now on the Indolent Books website.

Rest in Peace, Beast

Yesterday I announced a call for submissions to Transition: Poems in the Afterglow from Indolent Books. 

It only really occurred to me today that this means their What Rough Beast series is now dead, its last poem published on November 6, one day before Pennsylvania declared Biden the winner.

I'm going to miss that forum, which accepted 90 of my poems over its almost four-year existence. 

It feels weird to say I wish it went on a little longer. Especially since it's existence hinged on Donald Trump staying president!

It would have been nice to keep it going until the 20th, but that wasn't my call.

Thanks again to Michael Broder. It was an honor to participate while it lasted.
